Rinsui is a renovated machiya located in the heart of Co-machi. Built in the first year of the Meiji era (1868), it exudes elegance with its traditional Japanese architectural style known as irimoya-zukuri (hip-and-gable roof). Originally a merchant house with ties to a sugar wholesaler, it was bustling as a pottery shop, and later, during the Showa era, it also sold tobacco.
”Rinsui,” located at the corner of a narrow alley. The decorative window is a remnant of the bay window from its days as a tobacco shop. There are also local people who bring flowers and ask to have them arranged there.
Rinsui features an earthen floor, two Japanese-style rooms, a bedroom found in the attic, as well as a washroom and bath.
Upon entering the entrance, you are greeted by a rare earthen floor, where a kitchen and dining space have been set up. A built-in kitchen that is spacious enough for several people to work in. In the center of the dining area, there is a large table made from a single slab of solid wood. Whether cooking or dining, spending time in the earthen floor area makes the experience of “eating” feel open and light.
From the earthen floor, you can enjoy a spacious view of the two connected Japanese-style rooms and the small garden beyond them.
Tokonoma (a traditional alcove) and Chigaidana (staggered wall shelves) The Japanese beauty stands out in the minimal space.
Also, a pilgrim, with a cane and wearing a hat cross in front of the lattice door of the earthen floor. This is a scene that can only be seen in Shikoku.
Beyond the glass door, pilgrims and residents walk by. The gentle contrast between the shadowy interior of In’ei Reizan and the bright atmosphere outside feels soothing.
The tatami room offers a chance to appreciate the interior details and fixtures that are quintessential to Japanese architecture. The minimal space design of the tokonoma, the gentle light through the shoji, and the artfully crafted fittings all come together beautifully. Being there brings a sense of calm, and it is as if you are having a conversation with the craftsmen from 150 years ago.
We highly recommend viewing the transom carvings from both sides. The front and back of Benkei are carved.
Also, the appropriately sized garden at the back of the Japanese-style room will go with you during the peaceful moments of your stay. From the bathroom, you can gaze upon the garden, with its calming greenery offering a peaceful escape from the fatigue of your journey.
The modern bathroom and washroom are bright and clean.
The bedroom is on the second floor, up the stairs, in the attic with exposed, impressive beams and columns. It is small and has a certain rural charm, like a hideout or secret base, and is exciting for both adults and children.
The attic bedroom is also well-suited as a place for a restful and deep sleep.
Rinsui is an accommodation where the stay itself becomes the purpose of the journey. What may seem extraordinary now was once a perfectly ordinary part of daily life. Through your stay here, we hope you take back the essence, philosophy, textures, and memories of living in your own daily life. It is that kind of space.
